Scrapbooking My Story-  Scrapbooking My Story will be a yearlong project involving 2nd-4th grade foster students and 3rd and 4th grade at-risk students.  This project provides a way for the students to share information about him or herself in a non-threatening atmosphere.  It is also a way for the teacher or counselor to gain knowledge of the student’s family, thoughts, feelings, etc.  This project also builds on student’s experiences and will help activate prior knowledge, which will help them become more confidence with the writing process.

This project will involve students taking pictures, sharing the story behind the picture and journaling about their pictures.  Students will be given a disposable digital camera and will be instructed to take pictures of family members, celebrations in their lives, friends, things that make them happy, things that make them sad/unhappy.  We will focus on one category at a time.  Students will be given 3-4 weeks to take pictures.  Student will turn in the cameras for developing and the pictures will be saved on a CD.  We will meet and students will have an opportunity to view their pictures and pick some to display on the TV using the Aver key.  Students will then pick a few pictures and begin journaling about those pictures.  Students will be encouraged to write at least a paragraph about each picture.  The teachers will work with the students on sentence structures, punctuation, and grammar.  Using scrapbooking software, students will then upload their pictures and add their revised and edited journal entry.  Student will then be allowed to “get creative” with their scrapbook page.
