Juneteenth Ceramic Plate Design - This project will be a collaborative project between myself and a guest artist, Rhonda Haugabook. She has developed a lesson which celebrated the uniquely Texas holiday of Juneteenth.  I feel that this lesson would present students with a rich history of the event with an insight developed by Mrs. Haugabook through her study and the development of her personal artistic style and purpose.  This would provide new inspiration to student to express their ideas through color and symbol, instilling in them a rich cultural background from which to develop their creativity.  All Students will benefit from her presentation. The TEKS of this segment will be:  (3) Historical/cultural heritage.  The student demonstrates an understanding of art history and culture as record of human achievement.  The student is expected to: (a) compare and contrast historical and contemporary styles, identifying general themes and trends; (b) describe general characteristics in artworks from a variety of cultures; and (c) compare and contrast career and vocational opportunities.

Mrs. Haugabook will be teaching this lesson through her own art.  She will be presenting her plates as samples to demonstrate her use of symbol and color in expression.  Together we will encourage the students to create original designs with new tools of imager.  Each student till transfer a design, derived through their creative processes, onto a ceramic plate.  They will paint this prefired plate with glazes.  The product will then be kiln fired.  When the project is complete every student will have a product that will be a lasting reminder of their impressions and expression regarding the history and symbolism of our Juneteenth celebration.  I also believe that Mrs. Haugabook will impress students through her story telling ability and the richness of her voice regardless of cultural background.
